50% of U.S. homes now have PCs. With home networking becoming a reality we will also see homes with more than one. Seems like there will be continued demand for home PCs for many years to come. Jeff

LOS ANGELES (Feb. 9) XINHUA - Fifty percent of U.S. households had a personal computer in 1998, said Dataquest Inc., a leading market research firm, on Tuesday.

U.S. personal computer penetration into homes has been consistent over the past couple of years, according to a survey released by Dataquest.

In 1998, 50 percent of American homes had a PC compared with 43 percent in 1997, 36 percent in 1996, 27 percent in 1995.

"The PC penetration rate continues to increase at a healthy clip, showing that the PC is rapidly becoming a standard household appliance," said Van Baker, director for Dataquest's consumer market research.

Market sources say the two major factors driving the trend are falling prices and increasing performance of personal computers in the U.S. market, which contributes strong sales of lower-priced personal computers in the past two years.

Dataquest is a recognized leader in providing the high- technology and financial communities with market intelligence for the semiconductor, computer systems and peripherals, communications, document management, software and services sectors of the global information technology industry.
