I believe MP3 is patented by 2 people from Germany. Given the nature of the internet, I doubt we'll ever really know where the "internet music" originated. MP3.com is now partnering with Diamond but that may not last since Diamond recently introduced its Rioport.com site that is to be an equivalent.

Just curious how the purchase is being done for MP3.com. IMHO, it's a good example of frothy deals when you have a bull market such as the one we've been in. The fact that Diamond skirted such action as buying mp3.com and alternatively creating their own site is demonstrative.

Of course artists will tell you they love as much control over their product as possible. But when you get to the heart of the issue, everyone has a price and artists have repeatedly demonstrated that they will give up control in order to receive a bigger paycheck (otherwise, the record companies would be starving for acts since none would sign up). Furthermore, a recording artist would rather have 6% of the profit on sales of 250,000 albums than they would 50% on the sale of 10,000 albums. The bottom line is what is important.

Artists actions speak much louder than their words....

Name 15 of the music groups offered at his site w/out browsing the site. Or, find a good song on their that you enjoy equivalently to a song you heard on the radio and enjoy. Then compare how much time you spent on finding each. Ah, shucks....were back to the information problem (actually it's technically referred to as a "transaction cost".)

This MP3 hype is almost worse than the .com stock hype.

Christopher made some good points, but Betty countered most of them easily. CH, the producer is actually the musician, and anyone between him and the listener is a middleman.(yes, there is another meaning for 'producer')..CH, you are obviously an audiophile, so your needs are greater than the majority. The mass market isn't as needful about DVD/surround sound quality while jogging, or out on a picnic, or even driving in their car....this quality will eventually come, but isn't a priority now.
There are is a growing number of internet 'radio'stations. They can choose the selections according to the tastes of the listener. They give information on screen about the artist.
You give a lot of credit to the corporate entities, but didn't mention the beginning of most bands....Playing for local audiences, and then expanding to a larger region...other than groups like the Monkees and a few other Manufactured groups..this is how most of the groups start...not in some corporate office...the corp guys just come along later and skim the cream.
Musicians like to make money no doubt, but many play for the enjoyment..and always will..hopefully. FWIW, I listen to as many 'unheard' of groups as I do the well known..I like the raw energy. In truth though, I don't listen as much as I used to.
You are right, there are those that will always follow the POP mainstream, and let others dictate their tastes to them...but there are those that don't follow the herd also..so there is room for many types of music, participants, players and corporate/underground types..may they all be happy.
