...U.S. economic

No. The US is the leader in competitive manufacturing, inventory control, technology, electronic commerce, networking, semiconductors, software. Think MSFT, INTC, CSCO, DELL, YHOO.

The AT&Ts and IBMs of Japan (Sony, Hitachi, Toshiba, Fujitsu, NTT, NEC etc.) were never broken up or bypassed as in the US a decade ago.

Japan has few natural resources (I've already been blasted for this one) hence Japan has a smaller margin for error regarding manufacturing and the economy. Japan gained momentum from the early 50s to the late 80s by manufacturing high-tech products more efficiently than everyone else -- and sold them at a premium. All that has changed. The time-scale for that economic expansion was about 35 years. The time for Japan to "remake" itself can possibly go on for another 24 years.

One company that has promise is Softbank. Japan needs new "young" companies to take the lead.
