Good question. I wish I knew the answer.

Personally, I believe that the bulk of the problem was created by European imperialism which created a series of artificial states with meaningless borders. Countries like the emirates and Saudi Arabia and Kuwait were carved out of thin air.

Then these countries were used as pawns in the cold war by both the USSR and the West, and in the name of anticommunism we helped to create petty tyrants like Saddam, and I believe the cold warriors were responsible for the ascension of the ayatollahs in Iran and elsewhere in the Middle East.

What to do about it? I don't know. Not a single Arab nation is democratic, and I think that is the key to lasting world peace. Democracies do not make war on other democracies.
