Shop At Home Plans Internet Site for Collectibles

Nashville, Tennessee, Feb. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Shop At Home Inc., the third-largest U.S. home-shopping specialty retailer, said it plans to develop a collectibles Internet site to compete with Internet auctioneer eBay Inc.

Shop At Home, which already sells merchandise such as electronics, jewelry and sports collectibles on television and online, plans to begin operating the site later this year.

The Nashville, Tennessee-based company said Oracle Inc. and closely held Internet services company iXL Inc. will construct and service the www.collectibles.com site, selling items from jewelry to Beanie Babies. Collectibles account for 80 percent of Shop At Home's sales, the company said, primarily from its broadcast network.

''We intend to do auctions,'' said Kent Lillie, president and chief executive of Shop At Home. ''We plan to set up a community for collectors with chat rooms and customization as the site learns your interests.''

Although Shop At Home didn't announce a partnership with an online directory, such as Yahoo! Inc., as analysts expected, Lillie said that the company has ''had discussions with at least one of the major portals.''

''We hope to have a pending announcement soon with a strategic alliance with one of the portal companies,'' he said.

The company said it had a loss of $442,000, or 2 cents a share, in its second quarter ended Dec. 31, compared with the 1- cent average earnings estimate of three analysts surveyed by First Call Corp. The company had net income of $756,000, or 5 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue rose to $39.5 million from $23 million.

Shop At Home also begins trading on Nasdaq's National Market System today, moving from the Nasdaq SmallCap Market.

Shop At Home reaches more than 60 million homes each day through a network of more than 200 television, cable and satellite stations.

Shop At Home fell 10 1/16 to 20 yesterday.
