...And, James, does the bias inherent in the system, the capriciousness of its application to only a tiny percentage of those who kill, the unlucky 'chosen' being shamefully likely to be society's weakest members, not society's worst criminals-- that is, the rigged lottery nature of the application of this irrevocable penalty mean any more to you than it does to Christine?

Does everyone who supports our executing in our biased way think it's fine to execute the mentally retarded, btw? That was a new one for me. What about the insane? Is that generally fine, too, to the Feelings thread death penalty supporter population?

I wish my friend who said, of the death penalty in America, "It's not about them; it's about us," were alive. He was a wonderful man. His name was Henry Schwartzschild, and many of you have seen him argue this subject so learnedly in various public forums, and on television. If he were still alive, I could call and get any information I wanted, and he could provide it off the top of his head. But in spite of his scholarship on this subject, the most nemorable thing he ever said to me about the death penalty, and the way we apply it, is "It's not about them; it's about us."

>>"I am asking seriously. At what point does the risk of executing the innocent outweigh for you the attraction of execution for capital crimes?"<<

Let me get something straight. I am AGAINST capital punishment.
Now, before everyone starts laughing and throwing up their lunch, let me explain. I am AGAINST capital punishment because it is too MERCIFUL. The murderer feels nothing after he is executed.

I prefer the following form of punishment for convicted murderers.

1. All first degree murderers will be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

2. They will be placed in solitary confinement and will never be allowed to leave their cell, even for medical attention, until the day they die.

3. None of these murderers will be allowed to have books, newspapers, radios, TVs, nothing whatsoever except the clothes on their back. The cell will be furnished with a cot, toilet and sink. Nothing else will be allowed in the cell.

4. They will receive their food and water thru a small trap door at the bottom of a solid cell door.

5. The guard will be forbidden to speak to the prisoner.

6. After five years, as an act of mercy, the guard will be told to place a straight razor on the prisoner's food tray.

7. The murderer may do whatever he wishes with the razor....shave or kill himself......his choice.
