Works for AT&T, let long distance pay the bills while you grope around for some other way to enhance the company's value. In AOL's case that seems to be by moving the company away from being an ISP and becoming more of a portal.

Which fits with Pittman's background. Pittman after all comes from MTV.
MTV's business model says something like, get a channel of distribution (a cable channel) and have someone give you free content (music producers videos). AOL since Pittman is moving more in that direction, supplying less original content and more content from vendors, that is, becoming more of a portal.
