I have no I idea how it is done and why it is done.

If I offer stock and trades go through and the is really not much behind my order - why is the execution air?
Just looked though ddifferent tradelogs and also can't figure it out.

You mentioned something different. But this is likewise annoying. This steppin'on hence if, after your order is through and presented with say 5x someone comes and bids 10x at the same price. What you do - bid up. Sometimes, on an L II you see the other guy jerk off then, if you bid high enough..(or ask low, vice-versa)

On that penny stock, there was a passer by at the ask with "2200" shares (easy to watch on a time & sales figure) who always jumped by when I chased the stock downwards. Problem was that the bids were to weak to hit and when I finally gave in I sold laughable 200 shares on the first bid I took...
