Hi Zoltan- More on Robert Byrd's surprising (to me, anyway) admission, from today's WSJ. Well even this president's defenders in the US Senate claim Sleazewbag Bill has brought "shame and dishonor" to the Oval Office. With defenders like that, who needs attackers, even if a vote of censure is purely political theater. As for Byrd, he is the consummate pork-barrel politician who thinks it his his right to steal from some pockets to line others, as long as he does it accordance with the law. But he also values integrity, something I claim no defender of Clinton can claim he or she values.<<"It would be very difficult to stand and say 'not guilty.' Very difficult. Who's kidding whom here? I have to live with myself." With those words to ABC's Cokie Roberts on Sunday, Senator Robert Byrd became the only Senate Democrat to acknowledge the sacrifice that Bill Clinton is demanding of him. In order to rescue this profligate Presidency, Mr. Byrd and his fellows will have to trade away their political conscience. For however much pain impeachment has caused House Republicans, at least they can look themselves in the mirror each morning. They will have lost, but they stood for something larger than their own careers or partisan gain. They fought for the rule of law. Senate Democrats, for their part, will have voted to acquit a man who their own draft censure resolution asserts has "brought shame and dishonor to himself and to the Office of the President" and created "disrespect for the laws of the land." A man who, Senator Byrd now concludes, has "given false testimony under oath" and committed "high crimes and misdemeanors.">> Larry
