Whatever the wisdom of mandatory minimum sentencing, it is still not for political crimes, and most citizens have nothing to fear from the police, however extreme their political views or unconventional their life style. By the way, a good deal of the reason the crime rate has gone down is the increase in the rate of incarceration, and although, like Chuck Coulson, I would favor alternative sentencing for many victimless crimes, many of those busted for drugs or other infractions are also responsible for plenty of "victimful" crimes.

Buddy,

Gee, wasn't it Bill Clinton that passed
all these mandatory crime laws involving
drugs (loose license for a year), guns
(10 years and 10,000 fine for weapons),
100,000 more cops, jail for people selling
cigarettes to kiddies etc?
