In some ways that's almost reassuring except of course that you can't turn the clock back. I had projects in Pakistan at the time of the partition, which was nowhere near the fractionalization that has taken place in Africa, but which nevertheless started a substantial period of torment for a lot of people.. In lots of ways the colonial influence paralleled the raising of children. They were really better off but would not admit it when they had a firm disciplinary base to work from. Now look at them, children and previously subjugated races all over the world are in rebelion and confused as hell because they have rejected external authority for so long that they don't have (or haven't learned) self discipline and therefore have no basis for living in peace with society . Read a novel called The Death of Grass, by John Wyndham I believe if you want to see how quickly it can break down. I much prefer to get my lessons from fiction as long as I can find good authors.
