On penny stocks and very illiquid issues they can do some manipulation. On more liquid stocks, like Novell, there is some ability to fill large block buy orders without pushing the price up too quickly.

Basically, one has to know what they've invested in and be willing to sell when its smart (timely), and buy when its cheap. Otherwise, I look at MM's activity more as an indicator of things to come, since I don't day trade and hence have nothing to grumble about.
