A serious political defeat would dethrone the ideologues and elevate the pragmatists.

I think it will take a series of defeats for that to happen. I see the pragmatic Republicans taking control of the party, but not anytime soon. If they manage to do it by 2004, I would regard it as a tremendous achievement.

Sorry the explanation was tortured, I was having a heart attack and a little foggy. If the dems want to be the party that does away with corruption and moves ahead then they have lost it. They are now standing for protecting the status quo and leaving in a lying president.
