Human metabolism is very complex (not just human, of course) and disease is very complex. I spend a lot of time researching medical issues, I can tell that researchers are working very hard round the clock. I have immense respect for them. You and I are both old enough to remember before there were such things as organ transplants, pacemakers, MRIs, CT scans, all kinds of things we now take for granted. Medicine is an art, not a science. Even today. A good oncologist can tell you what is state of the art. Finding a good oncologist is the trick.
