And well they should be! These boxes number one job is to meter service to the consumer. They are gatekeepers, working for the service provider. Why should the consumer have to purchase equipment designed to exclude them from service and report them to the company when they partake of the product?

Nope, this set-top stuff is provider equipment and should be owned, controlled and capitalized by the service company.

If they follow the business model currently used by the cable companies for the decoder box for premium & PPV, this is a certainty (although the box really won't be free ... the user will pay one way or the other). The key is where does the revenue go? In this model, I believe it will go to the content owner and the controller of the infrastructure/pipeline. It could yield another whole class of internet-type stocks. NASDAQ will never be the same <gg>
