Research In Motion allies with major security company
WATERLOO, Ont. (CP) -- Research In Motion Ltd. has been selected to supply its wireless modem technology to the Ademco Group of Syosset, N.Y., the world's largest maker of electronic security equipment.
The modems will be used to enhance Ademco's long-range wireless security products and services, including AlarmNet, a radio communications service operating throughout North America, RIM said in a release today. The contract's value was not disclosed.

Through the use of RIM radio modems, alarm and status messages can be sent from the on-site security system to an AlarmNet Operations Centre via a national wireless network.

Wireless alarm delivery provides property owners with improved security in the event that a traditional wireline connection is damaged or compromised.

Ademco's AlarmNet service uses the Rogers Cantel network in Canada and the BellSouth Wireless Data network in the U.S.

"This new supply agreement represents a breakthrough for RIM into the security industry with an established market leader," said Research In Motion chairman and co-chief executive Jim Balsillie. "We are pleased to enter this agreement with Ademco and look forward to an ongoing relationship."

Research In Motion supplies modems to a diverse range of manufacturers for customized applications including hand-held terminals, laptop computers, wireless bank machines, in-vehicle computers and vending machines.

A friend called American Mobile/Ardis I.R: Here's an update from American Mobile/Ardis I.R. regarding their rollout of Pager 950.

"Our current schedule for launch of the new RIM Inter@ctive Pager 950 is mid-late second quarter this year. We are quite excited about the device, certain powerful and differentiating product characteristics, and major distribution partners. Stay tuned for announcements related to all of the above leading up to product launch."

Looks like May-June 1999 since their fiscal year matches the calendar year. Back to "stay tuned" mode:
