Actually the constitutional consideration with that case was reasonable doubt. The prosecuting attorney with holding crucial evidence was illegal. That evidence created a reasonable doubt which should have been strong enough to merit a new trial. Then a new jury would decide again the guilt or innocence in the matter. The personal opinions of the officials involved were irrelevant. They ignored the law and subverted justice and certainly allowed an innocent man to be executed.
