Proprietary ownership of the OS that ships on 95% of the desktops! You misunderstood my question. That is the difference today, but back twenty years ago Microsoft had no such advantage. In fact Apple had more desktops than Microsoft, Lotus was a much larger software shop than Microsoft. Come to think of it, perhaps the main problem with Apple and Lotus was the smug "our-product-is-superior" attitude that kept them on their fat arses while Microsoft learnt how to copy MacOS and 1,2,3 properly.
