Company Press Release
Dayton Mining 1998 Operating Results
VANCOUVER, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 11, 1999-- Dayton Mining Corporation (AMEX:DAY - news; TSE:DAY - news) announces its operating results for the year and quarter ended December 31, 1998.

Gold production for 1998 from Dayton's 100% owned Andacollo Gold Mine in Chile was 92,548 ounces of gold compared with 91,347 ounces of gold in 1997. Cash operating costs were US$241 per ounce of gold for 1998 compared with US$251 per ounce in 1997.

The Andacollo Gold Mine achieved record production during the fourth quarter of 1998 producing 30,558 ounces of gold at a cash operating cost of US$209 per ounce.

Operations Review

Total material mined during 1998 was 26.4 million tonnes containing 5.7 million tonnes of ore. A total of 5.5 million tonnes of ore grading 0.83 grams of gold per tonne (gpt) was crushed in 1998.

The lower than budgeted production during the year was mainly the result of lower than expected ore tonnage and grades encountered at the Socorro and Churrumata deposits. A comprehensive review of assaying techniques and grade control practices resulted in significant improvements in gold production in the fourth quarter of 1998. Additional work was carried out to improve crushing system operating time and assist with pit design and mine planning activities.

Dayton anticipates 1999 gold production of 145,000 ounces at a cash cost of US$210 per ounce. Ore will continue to be mined primarily from the Socorro and Churrumata deposits during 1999 with two additional deposits, Natalia and Chisperos, scheduled to come into production in the second and fourth quarters, respectively.

Dayton's hedge position for 1999 is 84,000 ounces of puts at US$340 gold per ounce.

Dayton Mining Corporation holds a 100% interest in the Andacollo Gold Mine located in central Chile, and trades on both the American Stock Exchange (AMEX) and Toronto Stock Exchange (TSE) under the trading symbol DAY.
