What a loaded question...

The MM's commit to make the market...Meaning the sec will let them do whatever the heck they have to to make it...Naked shorting and jumping around trade entries to exclude outside orders..Holding her down until the sellers disapear then selling a bunch up high real quick then move her back down and take some more.
Keep a ridiculous spread if they don't want your shares. Tighten it up when need more then back it off again. OR move up the bid until you see a market order coming then open wide...Shall I continue?LOL

Committed to making a market and most of the money...However it's not unusual to see half or more of them on the sidelines....
