Another e-mail security breach. Wednesday, February 10, 1999 STUDENT DISCOVERS EMAIL FLAW (BCTV) - An accidental discovery by a Vancouver secondary student has prompted computer giant IBM to send out a world-wide alert. The company is notifying users of one of its most popular software programs of a bug that could compromise the security of their e-mail. Harvey Oberfeld talked today to the student who discovered the problem: "A grade 10 computer class at Templeton High where students are here to learn. But where one made an amazing discovery." Victor Computer, Glitch Discoverer: "You push this button and enter the name...then another button and then you're in." Harvey Oberfeld: "And that's not your account you're in?" Victor Computer: "No... it's my teacher's." Harvey Oberfeld: "Without revealing exactly which keys Victor pressed ... the discovery that anyone using the school's IBM?s Net Vista Program could access staff email sent shockwaves through the system." Geoffrey Low, Computer Teacher: "It set off quite a few bells. It opened a few doors." Harvey Oberfeld: "The glitch turned out to be more signi ficant than they originally realized to not only read email but also write email in that teacher's name." Karl Jones, VSB Technical Adviser: "This is a high-quality system. It's used worldwide and these kids must be bright. They were the first to discover it." Harvey Oberfeld: "There are more than 12-hundred students at Templeton Secondary and all of them have access to computers in class or at the school library... And administrators feared some might even gain access to school records." Brenda Burroughs, Templeton Principal: "The technology group met and through a memo we advised all the staff." Harvey Oberfeld: "Did you send it email?" Brenda Burroughs: "No...hand delivered." Karl Jones: "We've come up with a solution and it will have to be installed on 3,000 to 4,000 computers in Vancouver alone." Harvey Oberfeld: "Did you tell the teacher?" Victor Computer: "Yes, after I read the mail." Harvey Oberfeld: "We'd better close it down before we both get a detention." Live Tag: "In Toronto, an IBM spokesma n said the bug discovered in Vancouver could affect up to five percent of all IBM Net-Vista software installations. He declined to reveal how many computers could be affected, but said Net-Vista is one of IBM's most popular programs world-wide, and the company has alerted Internet servers on how to remedy the problem."
