(BSNS WIRE) DCH Technology and Freewing to Integrate Fuel Cells Into Unm
DCH Technology and Freewing to Integrate Fuel Cells Into Unmanned Aeronautical
Vehicle

Business Editors

VALENCIA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)---Feb. 11, 1999--DCH
Technology Inc. (OTC BB:DCHT) and Freewing Aerial Robotics Corp.
have agreed to begin an exploratory development program to integrate
Hydrogen PEM Fuel Cells into the Freewing Tilt-Body Unmanned
Aeronautical Vehicle (UAV).
Freewing's air vehicles have extremely short takeoff and landing
capabilities which are in demand in both military and the emerging
commercial marketplaces. DCH's unique modular approach to fuel cell
systems provides flexibility in handling the various power
requirements in UAVs.
This multi-phase effort will begin with replacement of existing
lead-acid batteries, leading into the development of larger power
systems which are necessary to support the operational loads of
larger sensor (mission) packages and progressing into the possible
replacement of conventional engines for propulsion. This fuel cell
integration will enable the flying vehicle with longer endurance,
higher mission flexibility and improved logistics worldwide. This
commercially oriented cooperation is a milestone in both aerospace
and hydrogen energy sectors.
UAVs are used in place of more expensive manned aircraft in many
applications. The commercial and military markets for UAVs have
expanded dramatically in the last few years in response to economic,
liability and safety priorities. The Freewing's Scorpion UAV
accommodates cameras, radars and many other types of electronic
devices all of which may be energized by the DCH Hydrogen PEM Fuel
Cell. A fuel cell converts hydrogen directly into electricity
without polluting emissions. Hydrogen can be generated locally from
water or reformed directly from hydrocarbon fuel in inventory.
The UAV/PEM integration will be displayed at the 10th Annual
U.S. Hydrogen Meeting of the National Hydrogen Association. The
meeting is scheduled on April 7-9 at the Sheraton Premiere Hotel in
Tyson's Corner, Vienna, Va. It is anticipated this will be the
largest American meeting to date which will address the many facets
of Hydrogen Energy. Hydrogen is used today to fuel the Space
Shuttle and has been demonstrated as an effective energy source for
fuel cells in cars, power plants and aerospace/military systems.
