In a way they are, I was thinking more in line of the "physical" middleman.

Mitch, I don't think too many software developers want to go into the retail end of the business. It's much more economical for PROG to supply a central clearinghouse for software development products than for each developer to try to develop their own sales channels.

That is exactly what Amazon does. Rather than each publisher trying to sell to millions of customers, they sell to Amazon.
