I would categorize silicon carbide as an interesting advance for extreme environments and other such applications, including the ones you mention, as I wrote at some length in an earlier GTR (Gildertech.com). Of course, a different semiconductor element is much more expensive and misses the shared learning curves and economies of scale of ordinary silicon and more widely usable silicon on insulator technologies.
