VerticalNet is the first b2b company to come out. I guess Healtheon is second. There are some private competitors in some of their verticals, but no one is public. Plus, they are in 33 verticals, and I would guess that in 90% of the verticals, there are no legitimate competitors. Their strategy of being the branded site in lots of different distinctive verticals positions them to lead e-commerce efforts in those verticals in the near future. Very interesting strategy. Competition is relatively low. They will be looked at as the benchmark for b2b e-commerce companies coming out down the road.

These guys aren't public but they are already running online auctions and have been for a year and a half.

freemarkets.com

This regarding their customers from an old Information Week Article :

techweb.com

"FreeMarkets' blue-chip customer roster includes manufacturing leaders such as Caterpillar, General Motors, Procter & Gamble, United Technologies,Westinghouse, and Whirlpool."

This from Forbes on their founders :

forbes.com

They seem to be a bit ahead of VERT.
