Walmart was there ahead of K-Mart. K-Mart was the only (desperate) way that Kresge could survive as its traditional "Woolworth" type stores did less and less well. It was a gamble and it worked. However, K-mart did not try to poke a stick in the eye of Wal-Mart but worked around the edges of WalMart to secure a toehold, then a solid position. By the way, today, Walmart is doing a superior job of cost containment and is probably winning the war of the Marts.

Walton/WalMart isn't losing money.
