The Divx machine costs about $100 more than a DVD player. You have to set up an electronic Divx account when you buy the machine, and the movies won't play unless you have your player plugged into a phone line.
A Divx movie costs $5 or so to buy (renting a tape around here is $3something for a five-day view), and you get two "free" days of viewing from when you first stick it in your machine.
Then you either chuck the disc or get for-pay replays.

The thing that bugs me is that if a movie comes out on Divx, there's little incentive to publish it on an open medium like DVD. And the folks who are pushing Divx are the studios with lotsa toddler content. Now we're too old to have done this - but I've seen today's toddlers play a favorite movie over&over&over again. Disney animation cassettes actually break from use.
