Sean or other "hardware guys" question about types of AC bricks

I have one hub that has a garden variety blocky transformer, output 5 V 1200 mA, which generates a lot of heat. A second hub has a different "brick" which is much lighter and cooler ("Proton SPR-218L-05), doesn't seem to be a transformer at all; perhaps a rectifier of some sort? It runs quite a bit cooler and is flatter; yet outputs out more amperage (2.5 A) and gives a rating of .05 "max amps input"-- at pushing 50+ watts, quite a bit higher than the 15 watts input of the transformer.

Which is this latter beast? Is it more energy efficient?

Obviously, this is no urgent issue, but am I curious. TIA
