ddrdram.
consider these thoughts.
1. ddr is at best 1/2 the speed of rdram.
2. it is potentially an easy short term solution to an rdram shortage as the industry switches to rdram production. rambus ceo said 2 weeks ago that he expects ddrdram, if it comes to market, to have a brief, single generation life span of 2-3 years. just a filler as rdram takes over.
3. to date not a single manufacturer has demonstrated a working computer with ddrdram inside.

Yo_Robert J..............This DDR ram is primarily for high end PC SERVERS and WORKSTATIONS where as RAMBUS currently works with single processor regular-ole-run-of-the-mill pc's. The current chipsets that are designed for RAMBUS do NOT support multi-processor SERVERS and WORKSTATIONS. Intel and WINBOND (VIA CHIPSETS) are working on new generations of chipsets that will support multi processors but they are not scheduled for mass production until sometime in early 2001 hence the need for highspeed memory that is not RAMBUS. The article you posted clearly states what I have said in this reply to you---

"This DRAM, substituting both Rambus DRAM and the current synchronous DRAM is suitable for PC servers, workstations and data communication distinctively from rambus DRAM for general PCs, the company said."

Salude to all the "RAMBUSSERS"! Norman

Hi Robert,

"Can someone reconcile Samsung's statement in a release about two weeks ago that RDRAM would be 50% of its DRAM output with the recent (following one) on SDRAM and comment on what it means for Rambus? "

I too mused about this article a few days ago when it first appeared. I was going to comment about it, and on reflection consider it is probably a bad translation of an article whose author didn't know what he is talking about.

One point in it is probably true: DDR DRAM will probably find a nitch in servers due to its wider bandwidth possibilities. However as Uncle pointed out, to date as far as we know, no one has come up with a working motherboard for it.
Until that day happens, it's all smoke and mirrors. But Samsung must know something, or else they would hardly make the investment.
