Mardy, we control little in this modern world. Hence the fear over Y2K. Even if you are as pure as the driven snow, you are still stuck in the integrated, globalized world of mutual interdependence. I doubt synchronisation will be a big problem with GPS. The USA military don't use it because it is likely to conk out any time soon. We are all subject all day every day to standards over which we have absolutely no control. Maurice PS: OOops, now reading further through the thread I see Clark and others have already answered this stuff. Oh well, hopefully this puts in a different point of view. Sorry if this sequence of posts are repetitious of others' comments.
