Joker.org's glossary of computer daffynitions today gives insights into TrashPoint's production/marketing strategy:

Alpha: software undergoes alpha testing as a first step in getting user feedback. Alpha is Latin for "doesn't work."

Beta: software undergoes beta testing shortly (at MSFT this means 2-5 years) before it's released. Beta is Latin for "still doesn't work."

[ed.]Gamma: software undergoes gamma testing between announcing nonexistent contracts and total implosion. Gamma is Latin for "Gatesspeak; or a billion here, a billion there, who cares if it makes sense."
