TT a onboard DSP embedded into the microprocessor is the key to further improving video graphics. Your probably aware, video specs are very demanding to get an unflutter smooth seamless picture. untill now it had to be done using special equipment that cost hundreds of thousands of $$$. The prohibitive cost have keep the process out of the hands of most people. Just recently microprocessors from both INtel and AMd have been manufactured powerfull enough to perform rudimentary quality video reproduction over the personal computer. The big advantage of coarse is now it can be done for under $5,000. I' shure you have seen poor examples of low quality full motion video over the web. a lott of flutter and jerking unsmooth motion as the processor struggled to spec the refresher rates ect. Most of the problem with compressed digital signal is not on the compression end it's on the reciveing or decompresion end. I beleive AMd is light years ahead of INtel with AMD expertise in DPS technology, granted most of the earlyer applictions of there expertise were for voice audio application, video signal is more demanding. My point is we are on a threshold of many exciting enhancements for video to get the picture right. everyone is well aware of AMd advancements in games..but the application good far beyond game application. As chip resistor counts increase look for more and more embedded onboard solutions to be incorporated into the microprocessor. This is the direction AMd will take to differientate itself from Intel.

Time Traveler, regarding DSP:

I wish I knew more about modern DSPs. My guess is that the DSPs of today have much more functionality than the DSPs that I played with back in college. What those extra functions are, I don't know. How it can be integrated into the processor, I don't know.

It's an interesting area of research, though. I'll tuck it away in the back of my mind for the future. I enjoyed this discussion, even though I didn't offer much that you didn't know already.
