earlier you suggested increasing import duties on oil brought into the country. I see that as a form of subsidy for two reasons: It immediately takes money out of consumers pockets to buy that oil-the duty is passed through in the form of higher prices. We are still dependent on foreign oil for part of our needs. Then as ppl shun buying the imported oil (if indeed it can be kept separate from the domestic supply, once it goes to the refineries, which I doubt), the demand for domestic oil rises, as does the price--again forcing ppl to pay more.

When the govt placed higher import duties on motorcycles 750cc and above, that was a direct effort to assist one company: American-made Harley-Davidson. I never did like that. Why should I, who buys and enjoys Honda motorcycles, pay more just so HD can charge more to help out their inefficient factories?
