Cell phones and PDAs converge at
Wireless '99

NEW ORLEANS -- The buzzword
"convergence" wasn't out of place here at
CTIA's Wireless '99 show this week, especially as
Qualcomm Inc. came closer to announcing the
release of the pdQ, its eagerly awaited Palm III
and cellular phone hybrid.

Although the price of the pdQ has yet to be
finalized, the device is on track to be available by
June. According to Joanne Coleman, senior
director of public relations for the San
Diego-based company, "[The price] is going to
depend largely on the carriers. They haven't
dealt with a device quite like this, so the pricing
is still up in the air."

Coleman went on to say that the price could
vary anywhere between $500 and $1,000.

Qualcomm will also be providing the backbone
software for the pdQ in the form of the
pdQsuite.

The suite contains pdQmail, which Coleman
described as an "Eudora Extra-Lite" POP 3
(Post Office Protocol 3) e-mail retriever, and
pdQbrowser, a proprietary text-based
microbrowser.

With pdQmail, users can retrieve, read and
compose e-mail, as well as filter and file it. The
pdQbrowser will support inline hypertext links
and text formatting as well as traditional Web
browsing.

A trial version of the pdQsuite is being made
available to current PalmPilot and Palm III users
at www.qualcomm.com/pdQ/soft/.
