Dan--A wise man said recently:

"I find there are 2 things that informed Y2k optimists and informed Y2k pessimists can agree on...

1) It's too late to fix/replace all mission-
critical systems, including much in our basic infrastructure

2) NOBODY knows what that means.

The optimists and pessimists just come away from that reality with different levels of comfort."

Peter

My "comfort level" has been steadily declining since about May '98 when geek sources indicated to me that the slippage which had ocurred up to that point was significant enough that they were beginning to sweating it. Add that info to some relatively obscure articles I had picked up from news services re: second/third party (correct term ?) hardware scheduling and I could see that it was not a "too close to the problem" issue with my geek sources' assesment. "Time to rethink this," I said.

Occasionally I find great news. The Denver area sewer provider story for example (see my previous post) that tells me real work and contingency planning is taking place. Much of what I read in the "good news" category has the "Happy Face Sticker of Approval" (HFSA.)

Oh by the way...On second thought there will be bananas on that DeJager flight, but perhaps not on subsequent flights as I recall from last week's Senate testimony the Dept. of Ag. estimates that 40% of our fruit is imported and a large percentage of that is bananas.

Alastair,
Mr. Hamilton has made a good analysis here.I would argue that what he thinks or how he makes or loses money is irrelevant to how you or I
should evaluate y2k on a personal basis.Mr. DeJager is only one opinion, there are many many others out there.Cultists follow one opinion a wise man will consider all.
