Compaq gained on them in worldwide sales

That is pretty amusing. For months we having been hearing on this thread was how badly Compaq was doing, and how it was the result of their relationship with AMD and Cyrix.

In contrast, Dell has been held up as the shining standard of Intel purity.

Any OEM which stakes their future on PIII sales will be setting themselves up for big trouble. Between CPUID, the lack of distinction between KNI and 3DNow, and the unjustifiable overpricing of PIII, it is looking like a pretty weak product introduction.
