Why would MSFT be interested in BGP? It would create conflicts in the channel, since MSFT and its competitors sell books through Borders. MSFT's investments are strategic. For example, MSFT invested in Comcast last year because they realized the importance of bandwidth to the Net.

Now I happen to agree that BGP is undervalued, but value per se is not important to MSFT. Running a chain of bookstores would be a big distraction for MSFT. E-businesses maybe, but they wont touch bricks and mortar IMHO. It just doesn't fit in with their business model.

BGP has a great opportunity to create links between its local stores and its web presence to expand the browsing and shopping experience. But I think it will do this on its own. I think it is a fantasy to think that there's a knight in shining armor that is waiting to rescue the damsel in distress.
