I second your erudite post. James "ron reece" Carville is a blight on SI!

And while I'm at it,
I personally wish to profusely apologize to my nation's global neighbors
for the spineless acquital that occured in America today.

Even the Japanese have more conscience than we do when it comes to disposing of obvious, immoral, shameless leadership...especially when their leaders/premiers/ministers are caught with their pants down!

What a black day in our nation's history!

No wonder gold peeked up a tad today. Very few things in our world are worth more than their weight in gold. Billy's Willy is NOT one of them!!!

JL,

My "agenda" is look rationally at the gold market and ALL OF THE POTENTIAL EVENTS that may impacts its value vis-a-vis the almighty US dollar.

As CK Houston fully knows, I believe that Y2K may be one of the events that brings gold into a position to challenge the Dollar. But the jury is still out and there are still steps that can be taken by the Fed and CBs to prevent a challenge to the dollar.

Incumbent in analyzing Y2K is the psychological dynamic of investors and your average "joe six-pack" and how they will react to potential disruptions or overall fear of the unknown.

Analyzing Gold, like the dollar, IMO, requires paying wholistic attention to the global economic and political conditions.

While there certainly is WAY TO MUCH CONSPIRATORIAL SPECULATION and POSTURING about the actions of our gov't, present and future, there is far too little OBJECTIVE ANALYSIS on what this may mean for the price of gold and the value of the dollar.

I'm as guilty of letting my emotions get out of hand as anyone else here. But the level of fear-mongering and conspiratorial diatribes that underlie the current analysis of gold on this thread is what REALLY IS THE DOMINEERING FORCE.

All this talk of secret national mobilization of the NG in impart martial law in tandem with Y2K is sheer speculation. It may or may not occur. But I have little doubt that contingency plans are being made, as well they should be. Just like better intelligence might have prevented Tim McVeigh from undertaking the OK City bombing, or the bombing of the World Trade Center (where 50,000 people work everyday) by Mid-East terrorists. Potential threats require prudent plans, even if those plans never are implemented.

As for being an apologist for the CinC, I can hardly be considered as such. I wish he had done the manly thing and resigned rather than put all of us through this. A Republican certainly would have under the same circumstances (he would have been forced to by his party leaders).

I don't want what happened to Germany in the 30's happen here, but I worry, it only takes an unscrupulous leader that loves power and a reason to declare martial law.

I certainly don't wish that either. But the leader is only the catalyst for the creation of an authoritarian dictatorship. Without a seriously humiliated, demoralized, and poverty-stricken population looking to restore a former national pride, the power base would not be sufficient to create and sustain dictatorial rule.

I would worry more about Russia. All of those conditions exist there.

Conspiracies undoubtedly exist out there, but there are so many and so diverse (eg: right wing vs left wing conspiracies), that it is different to capture our interests. And so long as there are enough people hell-bent to preserve our freedoms through capturing the attention in the media, there will be a semblance of guarantees for our civil rights (IMO).

I really think most of the people on this thread are underestimating the American people as a whole and those who serve in its military and government. These people are patriots as well and a wealth of history to remind them of how we are a unique people and ideological force in this world. (However, maybe I'm overestimating our moral values after today's vote and the recent polls..:0).

You all think I'm some kind of "statist" or gov't lacky which, if you have really looked and analyzed my words, is the farthest thing from the truth. I believe in the least amount of gov't possible (always a moving target), and whatever policy, public or private, that achieves the goals.

If you don't like the current system, then get out there and vote. Vote in the national elections, but most importantly, vote in the local elections where national power bases are created.

If you don't vote, don't b*tch.

Regards,

Ron
