The ACLU will then get them off by claiming their Constitutional right of freedom of religion is being violated by the state. The parents will then have more children to feed to the snakes. It is a slippery slope, absolutely, and we're already on it. The state cannot force anyone to be a good parent. We have drawn the line at physical abuse, though the line between corporal punishment and physical abuse is and will always be a matter of judgement. But while we agree that psychological abuse is impossibly difficult to define, and cannot be legitimate grounds for removing a child from parental custody, we should also realize that psychological abuse is a very real thing. Many, children suffer it daily, and many adults carry scars that warp their lives. I don't know what the answer is, beyond the impossibly wimpy one of trying to teach people to be better parents. Possibly there is no answer. I have seen what extreme fundamentalists can do to children, and I think it is despicable. I don't think those children should be taken away from their parents, but my gut shrinks at the thought of what they have to face. Easy call to make, tough one to live with.
