John, the 3G Cellular model is along the lines of what I was referring to from a topological perspective. Although, I didn't intend to have all of the moving parts and the extended geographical reach of the cellular machinery in place, and all of the attendant carrier-mentality pricing structures that such would entail.
Have you seen a publishable economic model of the 3G architecture from the service provider's perspective? One that depicts both the bandwidth resource allocations, the cost of terminal gear, and the financial pricing schemes for the breadth of service areas that it would be deployed in? Anything along those lines would be interesting to discuss.
As an aside, I think that the carriers' views of cellular delivery, over time, will face stiff competition from (or will need to make swift adjustments to) the emerging VoIP from anywhere paradigm. The folks over in Qualcom, Siemens and Ericsson, and some others, have already figured this out, and they've already announced IP in their next gen Cellular/PCS platforms, as well. Not merely for supporting control channel and adminstrative activities over IP, rather, full fledged Internet IP for end user voice and data services, as well. -------

Please allow that I didn't phrase my WTTC correctly. I understand how you interpreted my post literally, as you should.

To clarify what I meant, my point of reference was the end user, not the head end or field node. Of course, and as you so aptly noted, I was suggesting that the bulk payload delivery from the head end or whatever source be delivered to the field over fiber, not wireless.
In the proposed model, the last 1500 feet would be delivered over BB Wireless, as opposed to coax... which makes up a large percentage of the unit costs per passed structure. This stands in stark contrast, from a purely performance-oriented perspective, to the use of the optimal delivery platform which would be pure fiber. But what are the realities of that happening anytime soon? Anyone have any notes on such a deployment (pure fiber to the home) in the makings at this time?
In retrospect, what I had suggested actually mimics, to a great extent, the original CAI cellularvision model that was first implemented in Brighton Beach, here in Brooklyn. But my view would call for far less geographic or POP density, adjusted or tunable to either, per cell cite [or neighborhood node]. ----------------- Dave,
Your response is more in line with what Bernard's rightful interpretation of my misnomered WTTC was. Still I found it interesting, and a worthwhile read. Has this hybrid model, hybrid satellite terrestrial network, entered into any of the work that you have been involved with? How many of the established DOCSIS drafts and standards would be leveragable here? Curious. -------------------
In retrospect, now that I think of it, I seem to recall reading (maybe even posting) something about a wireless DSL platform. My recall of this was that it was too paltry to consider on the same scale as HFC, but along the same lines as what we're discussing here. Does anyone recall the vendor or service provider offering these WDSL services? I'll try to locate it.
