Chip Aalyst Kurlak Leaving Job at Merrill

Semiconductor market analyst and the most influential bear on the semiconductor industry Tom Kurlak has lost his post at Merrill Lynch & Co.

In 20 years at Merrill, Kurlak drew a wide following of investors because of strikingly accurate predictions of semiconductors sales; he foresaw slumps in mid-1997 and early 1998. But in recent months he badly misread the fortunes of Intel Corp. Since Kurlak lowered his rating on Intel to "long-term neutral'' last August, Intel's sales have soared and its stock is up nearly 50 percent.

Intel and TI are the two largest customers of AMKR. Both Intel and TI have more than 10% of AMKR 1998 revenue. But Intel used to have more than 20% and 30% of AMKR revenue before. The share was reduced because of the broader customer base of AMKR now.
