If we allow "any words" as you suggest, SI may degenerate into a Yahoo type of board, which I hope none of us ever want to see. I don't know if you saw the Slider post that likely got him suspended (not banned, he'll be back I'm sure), but he called a person of Asian descent "an ingrate 3rd World Jungle Raised Emigree from a Thatched Hut Culture" and then asked if he had his green card (the post was full of other invectives, but that was the worst). That post has been deleted by SI management, but several posters responded to it with disapproval. The comment had nothing to do with stocks, and was intended only to insult this person who has made very cogent comments on this board, but those comments were not in line with Slider's point of view.

I don't think that we should all run to SI management to resolve our petty bickerings, and I for one have never done so, but Slider has done this before and does not seem to learn. There is no call for racist insults to fellow posters. This isn't about freedom of speech, feel free to publish whatever you want, anytime you want, on your own Board. You have to remember that this is a privately run Board and it has certain Terms of Use with which we have all agreed to abide. If Slider complies, he's free to post.

This isn't the Government banning free speech, it's a private company exercising its right to control the content of the Boards. At times I have disagreed with their censorship of posts that were critical of Go2Net and its stock price, I think that is an example of a topic that falls within the Terms of Use, and should not have been censored. But for the most part, I think SI shows fairly good restraint with its censorship, and I do not believe that anyone has the unfettered right to hurl racial insults at fellow posters on SI.

John,
This is a little different from freedom of speech. It's more like if I was in your restaurant and made some inflammatory remarks to one of the other people eating in the restaurant. Wouldn't you have the right to kick me out?
