Of course I saw the acquital the first day as did everyone else. Don't flatter yourself. It's just that anything can happen and Byrd might have made a difference had he wanted to. What principle a vicious witchhunt that fell short of it's goal, gaining control of the executive office the easy way so they could wrest control from the party bringing the greatest economic prosperity the world has ever seen. Instead they showed the world the mean spirited bastards they are. I'm sure this nation's citizens wants people like this controlling their medicare and social security. I think not

Victory was had by House managers who risked their political viability doing the right thing. They put principle over politics.

Bill I have been following the media pretty intensely on this and for sure the republicans thought they could get away with ousting Clinton and NOT damage the party initially - thats why they did it, they thought they could win. Then, after the Nov elections it became clear that wasnt quite true... but they still thought the public would forget (Buchanan said this many times on McLaughlin - "it wont matter elections are 2 years away!" ). The defining moment when they finally figured out that they were hanging themselves was when Clintons approval ratings went up after impeachment. Then the republicans knew they were screwed, not before.

Ill bet if they had known they would lose with the public so badly they wouldnt have done it - it was arrogance pure and simple not some higher goal.

It reminds me a little of when the prince of england had to leave to marry Wallace Simpson. History books say he did it for love - not really, he actually tried a complex maneuver in the english courts to annul her marriage and it failed, then he was ruined and had to leave. (which is not to say he didnt love her but in hindsight he may have behaved differently)
