>>>the task of determining fair value for these internet stocks remains a mix of math, magic and guess work<<<

Ever wonder how seed funding is provided to the startups, how venture capitalists like CMGI valuate the company to determine the first, second and thrid rounds of funding.....? They're pretty ruthless in their assessment of the company valuations. They're also very astute in determining their potential...

The concept stocks are just that - concept stocks. What value would you assign to a concept ? Potential is huge if it succeeds....and acquisitions are made on the premises of success...

I'm not a shareholder (sold out at 120 :-( - but the value assigned was unfair.....JMHO

The LCOS deal and Internet Mania are covered in Monday's Barron's. A few analyst takes (H&Q Raise to STRONG BUY and BTAB Lower to BUY) of the LCOS deal are also linked to:

For most part, I agree. NYT and Bloomberg have echoed much of mainstream financial press's skepticism at net values. As such, they are parroting many of the same traditional-thinking analysts (their regular "sources") who seem to have ganged up on the sector of late. Seems like the old school analysts are trying to talk the sector down so their brokerages can jump in where they had earlier missed the boat.
