Dear Pat,
Three years ago, I replied to your letter that you sent out to your supporters asking our opinion about whether or not you should continue to work with the Republicrats or build a new—true—conservative party.
As you now stand poised to announce your candidacy for 2000, I felt compelled to write once again and urge you to join forces with the USTP. As I began to write, I realized that I had said it all before, and my previous letter is, if anything, more relevant today than then—and so I will simply recycle my previous pleas.
I have naught to add save this:

April 28, 1996
Dear Pat,
As a long time admirer and fan of Patrick J. Buchanan, and a conservative Christian patriot who fears for the future of America, and indeed for the very survival of our wonderful nation founded by and for Almighty God, I was proud and delighted to volunteer as a precinct chairman for Buchanan for President.
I acquired an assistant named Stefan, who although only six years old, was also proud and delighted to walk the streets with Grandpa and tell people about Pat.
Together we passed out flyers, assembled and distributed yard signs, and told everyone that would listen to us -- and some that wouldn’t -- about Pat.
Together we attended the rally in Houston, and together we went to the polls on election day, and Stefan "voted" for Pat.
At the precinct convention, I chaired the meeting, my son John was elected as a delegate, my wife Sherlyn was elected as an alternate, and Stefan was the unofficial Sergeant-At-Arms.
Stefan is just one of my seven grandchildren, and in case you haven’t guessed, those are the seven reasons why I support Pat Buchanan.
But I must be honest with you.
Stefan and I do not understand your confusion and indecision about the best course of action for your our campaign, now that you have been beat-up, torn-down, sabotaged, ridiculed, vilified, demonized, and ostracized by the elitist Republican establishment.
Stefan and I think that you know, in your heart and soul, the answers to the questions that you recently submitted to your supporters to aid in your decision, but I will include them here to help bring things into focus.
You wrote:
What do you think is the best course to advance the causes for which
we fought and in which we believe? You know what they are:
# Ending the slaughter of unborn children.
My Answer: The elitist Republican establishment (herein after referred to as "Republicrats") will never vote to overturn Roe v. Wade, and end abortions in America. Whenever they can’t ignore it all together, they handle the abortion issue like a hot potato.
# Restoring America's lost national sovereignty.
My Answer: The "Republicrats" are just as much a part of, and advocates of, the New World Order, as the Democrats. The elimination of American sovereignty is the major hurdle to the establishment of the NWO.
# Restoring a rising standard of living for America's workers and
middle class families who have watched wages fall, as a result of
unfair trade deals that ship many of our best jobs overseas.
My Answer: See question #2.
# A new foreign policy that looks out for America First, and keeps
U.S. soldiers out of foreign wars where they do not belong.
My Answer: See question #2.
# An end to the looting of America via foreign aid, and World Bank
and IMF loans to socialist and Communist regimes.
My Answer: See question #2.
# Reasserting control of our Southern borders, and wholesale reform
of our immigration laws.
My Answer: See question #2.
# Tax Cuts for America's families, who now pay more to the government
each year than for food, clothing, and housing combined.
My Answer: Although the "Republicrats" will continue to give lip service to tax cuts, and make token attempts to lower taxes, they will not bite the bullet and propose and stand firm on the kind of unpopular budget cuts that would allow true reform and lowered taxes. This was evident in the recent budget battle fiasco.
# Tax Cuts for businesses to make America the Enterprise Zone and
industrial powerhouse of the entire world.
My Answer: See question #2.
# New trade policies that end the hemorrhaging of American jobs and
factories overseas.
My Answer: See question #2.
# Term limits on federal judges and congressional politicians.
My Answer: Read the Congressional Record.
# Campaign finance reform that rings down the curtain on the
glorified bribery that passes for fund-raising in our capital city.
My Answer: See previous question.
# De-polluting America's popular culture.
My Answer: "Republicrats" are not willing to challenge the revisionist view of American history that denies America’s Godly heritage, and questions the importance and even the existence of God. This denial is the root cause of the problems in our society today. If there is no God, then nothing is inherently wrong, and there are no problems with our culture.
These are the causes for which we fought; and our great goal remains:
Restoration of the constitutional republic of our Founding Fathers'
dream -- a republic that no longer squanders a quarter of our
national income, taxes citizens into destitution, or intrudes so
massively in the lives of our people.
But what is the best way to advance these causes: Inside the
Republican Party outside the Republican Party?
My Answer: See all of the above.
Together, over the past year, you and I put on one of the great
campaigns in modern history. We ignited a powerful movement that will
surely survive our own political lives.
Do we use our influence at the Republican convention to move the
party further in our direction, and look to our future there - in the
continued hope of making that party the core of a great Middle
American coalition?
My Answer: Accepting a few crumbs from the table of the "Republicrats" in the form of a brief, condescending, token recognition at the National Convention does nothing to further our cause. Attempting to reform the "Republicrat" party from within, while battling the powerful combined forces of the political establishment and the liberal controlled media, is futile, non-productive, and in short, extremely dumb. This country does not have enough time left to allow a gradual reformation.
Or do we step out, now, and build a new institution, a Third Party,
as the vehicle of our cause?
Answer: Bingo!!
My Comments: But rather than build a new institution, why not adopt an existing one; one that already has a commitment in their platform to stop abortion in America; return America to the Biblical principles upon which it was founded; restore and defend American sovereignty; accomplish true tax reform; limit the powers of the Federal government to those defined in the Constitution; and give America back to her citizens, and let them live in peace as "One Nation under God."
The platform of the U.S. Taxpayers Party reads as if Pat Buchanan wrote it, but it’s fairly obvious that the USTP can’t possibly succeed without someone of Pat Buchanan’s stature to lead it. At the same time, it also seems obvious that Pat Buchanan can’t succeed by continuing to fight the rigged fight within the "Republicrat" party.
Making a run for it on a third party ticket as the USTP candidate might or might not be successful. We might or might not win. But at least I can look Stefan in the eye and say we fought a good fight -- and we didn’t sell out.
I know it would be extremely difficult for you to burn your bridges and leave the Republican party. But it’s not you that is the turncoat. The "Republicrats" are the ones that have sold out -- and abandoned the values that once defined the party.
And I’ve heard all the arguments against a third party run, and the dire predictions of splitting the vote and assuring a Clinton win. But I believe that I speak for a lot of your supporters when I say "So what?"
A Clinton win and four years of Hillary unleashed might be the shock treatment needed to awaken even the most complacent and apathetic voter.
And so, dear Pat, we implore you -- don’t settle for the crumbs. Hold strong to your vision of America that you, and I, and Stefan, and millions of Buchanan Brigade members fought for.
Don’t compromise, don’t negotiate, and never forget that the tremendous outpouring of support for your candidacy came from people who believed in your vision, and were proud to at long last have an honest, trustworthy candidate who said what he meant, and meant what he said.
You cannot betray that trust.
Your friends,
Charley Clements
