<They do find relief when the killers die- because while someone lives there is always the
possibility that they will be released. Let me give you a personal example.>

I'm so sorry to hear about your father, X. I had no idea! I read this the first time right before I went back to bed, and thought there would be a gazillion posts in response to yours by now, but I guess it is too disturbing or something. I especially wondered what the response of the anti-death penalty crowd would be.

When I wrote that post about families of murder victims and what happens after the murderers die, I was not thinking at all about the relief of knowing the killer might be released. I was talking about revenge, and the feeling that having the murderer die will finally bring peace to the families. From the interviews I have read this doesn't often happen, and seems a little like a false promise.

I had not read that post of yours until I saw Christine's reference to it just now, and her expression of interest in how the anti death penalty crowd would feel about it. How unspeakably horrible. When I read about murderers I want to kill them. I want revenge. If it is a particularly brutal murder, I want, in my heart, to have that person die slowly. If someone murdered someone I loved, I sometimes think I would kill them myself. I understand those feelings completely because I share them.

I am so sorry about your father, X.

E.

I am very sorry that you lost your father like that. It's terrible. And I agree with you that the killer should not go free. If they allow insanity pleas at all and then don't execute them they should never get out. Why should they. Their punishment should be permanent. Being depressed is no excuse. And what if they get depressed again?

X, I too am sorry to hear about your father's death. I just now read about it. I would not have guessed that one of the people involved in these discussions would have such a close personal experience. I have not commented until now, but my position is to support the death penalty. Work needs to be done to make it apply to rich and poor alike. There should be no O.J.s walking free because they could afford a high profile liar (er lawyer) while a poor man gets executed. I heard a Canadian comedian once remark "what are you Americans thinking when you let a person go because he is insane. That's all the more reason to execute them." There is no guarantee that an insane person is ever cured, therefore we need to protect the innocent majority.

Dear X, I, too, am sorry that your father was shot. The link you posted was inactive, so I don't know what happened. I don't suppose that matters, but I am curious. I don't know whether it was a long time ago, or recently, although maybe that doesn't matter, either. You are a very nice person, very intelligent, and good hearted, and I like you very much. I think we all like you, and are lucky to have you. Thank you for being brave enough to tell us about your pain, it is a lesson to us all.

Edit: I tried the link again, and it worked. I wonder about the web site, it seemed dedicated to incidents where people shot up their workplace and killed coworkers?

I am Catholic, and the Catholic church opposes the death penalty, but I do not. I think that people who kill other people continue to be potentially dangerous, and it is impossible to incarcerate them safely. I don't think innocent people should be endangered, and regretfully support the death penalty as I would support euthanizing a rabid dog.
