PGC: Often it is both. Only experience will teach to read the difference and then many never learn. This is not something that can be taught.

If you understand that when there are a lot short positions, sharp upward price moves can trigger a short cover. This can cause a short squeeze rally. But along with the short covering will be traders buying in long for the ride...
