"As I researched genealogy, I found that my family, as well as the vast majority of Eastern European and Russian Jews, cannot trace their ancestry back to Israel, but to the Khazar tribe of the steppes. " Can you tell me just exactly what genealogical research you performed? The claim that modern Jews are primarily the descendents of the Khazars is really ridiculous. Prove if you can that anyone is a descendent of the Khazars. Actually, most East European Jews are descended primarily from Jews who fled persecution in Western Europe (Germany, France, Italy) during the Crusader and Black Death eras and found refuge in Poland and the Austro-Hungarian empires during a time when those Kingdoms were quite tolerant. A great many came from what is now Germany and this is the reason that Jews in Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Hungary, Poland, Bielorussia, Ukraine, Romania and elsewhere in East Europe spoke a language primarily derived form German. (In fact some East European Jewish families can track their ancestry back to Western Europe. As an example, the East European name Rapoport originated with an ancestsor who was a rabbi in Porto Italy). The Kingdom of Poland's boundaries expanded and contracted over the centuries but at various times included much of the Ukraine, Byelorussia, and the Baltic states. When Russia eventually expanded to the west, it acquired a Jewish population with it's new territory and confined the Jew's to the Pale of Settlement in the westerly part of Russia, where they were already living. The Khazar theory, so popular with anti-Semites like your husband* is patently ridiculous. The Yiddish language is all the evidence you need. Why would a bunch of Khazars, who likely spoke a Turkish language, develop a language based on the language of Germany where no Khazars ever lived? And please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Yiddish words are about 80% of German origin mixed in with 10% or so each words of Hebrew and Latin origin. Exactly what you'd expect given the origin of East European Jews in Western Europe. Please post any Yiddish words which are derived from a Turkish language or from Khazar, whatever that is. I don't think there are any such words, but please feel free to enlighten me on this score. IMO, it's obvious the modern Jews are, at least partially, descendents of the ancient Israelites (of course, so is almost everyone to a very small extent). And they are also descendents of the many converts to Judaism that occurred in the ancient world prior to the rise of Christianity. There are no pure bloodlines anywhere. So you are in fact at least partially descended from ancient Israel. To a much smaller extent, so is your husband*, so am I, and so is most of the population of the world, except for maybe "fullblood" Native Americans and Australians and Polynesians (of course, given the history of the last 500 years it's unlikely there are any such "fullbloods" any more. *Note: I've pretended for the sake of discussion that Bette exists. Frankly, I think it's likely Emile invented her. In fact, I'd be mildly surprised if Emile is even married. Bruce
