>If i have choice of bank direct online payment, quicken, or maybe pay direct to phone company online why do i need checkfree?

IMHO, the alternatives to CheckFree all require the consumer to give up something.

With bank direct debit, the consumer gives up:
- the ability to specify the date and amount of payment.
- the ability to easily switch banks
- the ability to vary the amount of payment (example, a credit card where the consumer doesn't want to pay the full amount or a phone bill where a credit has been issued which isn't reflected in the online balance)

With Quicken, CheckFree is already heavily involved on the payment end and will be the main provider of e-bills.

With phone company online, the consumer gives up:
- the convenience of going to one place to retrieve bills. Instead, he is forced to go to a lot of different web sites to view bills.
- the same look and feel for each of the bills

are't they vunerable of being 'avoided' in the online paying process?

I'm not sure what you mean by this statement. CheckFree is already the main provider of online bill payment and will continue to be. IMHO, the most convenient method for the consumer will win out. For many consumers who utilize Quicken, that will be the most convenient method. For those who utilize portals, like MyYahoo, it may be more convenient to do all of their banking through the portal. Lastly, many consumers will feel most comfortable with the trusted reltationship with their bank, and prefer that approach.
