ASDL vs Cable Modem. I can get either service in my area

Thats not gloatting I hear is it <g> you lucky dog you...

I hope someone with actual modem sharing experience responds. I was in the reading phase until I back burnered a modem sharing attempt about a year ago. I hope to bring that project foreward again soon.

The discussions that were taking place are archived in Zeuspauls Dream Machine Auxiliary site home.att.net./%7eZEUSPAUL/auxiliary/auxiliary.htm Click on modems I believe and sort through to find those about sharing modems via proxy servers, dats, and all in one hub/router/modem devices. We were discussing dialup modem connections for the most part but I believe much of the info is also pertinent to cable and dsl modems.

Bruce,

Depends on the vendor and the services offered in your area. most all the cable and dsl modems seem to work fine with wingate or sygate. You need two ethernet cards in the machine thats going to act as your NAT/PROXY/SOCKS Server. Price and Spec the services and your area. post the results. I'm sure we be interested in seeing the comparison. Most of us can only get 1 solution at best. I personally prefer a cable modem but need to see the specs/cost/features of the specific service offerings to make a further recomendation.

wingate.net - Proxy/Socks V4/5 and now with 3.x has NAT too
sygate.com - Transparent NAT
